Gnatology

Gnathology is a field in dentistry that deals with the masticatory system and its disorders. Dental Gnathologists treat clients with different symptoms, including:

  • Pain in the masseter/jaw joints
  • Impairment (e.g. limitation of the mouth opening)
  • Temporomandibular joint sounds
  • Headache
  • Facial pain
  • Unexplained toothache
  • Teeth grinding/clenching
  • Teeth wear

The treatment

You are most likely being referred to a Gnathologist by your dentist because of pain and/or dysfunction in your masticatory system or problems with your teeth.

During the intake consultation, you will discuss your (pain) complaints with the Dentist Gnathologist, and the Dentist’s Gnathologist will examine this. There is extensive research into your masticatory system and/or teeth functioning. Based on this study, the Dentist Gnathologist will discuss your diagnosis and treatment plan. The examination report and the proposed treatment plan will also be discussed with your referring dentist.
